Kratom is the common name for the plant Mitragyna speciosa Korthals, originated
from South-East Asia. In Thailand the leaves of this tree-like plant have been
used for many centuries for their medicinal and psychoactive qualities, which
are comparable to that of opiate-based compounds. Kratom leaves were used to treat
everything from diarrhea, headache and cough to opium addiction and pain. The lower
laboring classes of Thailand also used Kratom as a recreational product to escape from
their daily hardships, as well as to stimulate their mind and body. In recent times
the use of Kratom as a recreational substance has also gained popularity in the West.
Today, Kratom is a powerful herb providing adults with relaxation, mood elevation,
pain relief and an exploration of inner state.

What are the effects of Kratom?

Kratom is unique because it induces distinct effects depending on the serving portions.
Remarkably, Kratom has both stimulating and sedative-like qualities. The enjoyment
comes on fairly quickly, within five to ten minutes, and can be remarkably pleasurable,
i.e. relaxation and sedation, analgesia and euphoria. Hence, Kratom experience has been
described as similar to opiate-based products, but milder. At small servings, the effects
of Kratom are stimulant and euphoric. An individual may feel more alert, talkative,
sociable and energetic. In addition, sexual energy has also frequently been increased.
At higher servings, Kratom may produce extremely pleasurable, euphoric effects that are
often accompanied by closed-eye visuals. The effects of Kratom last for about 4-6 hours,
but the residual lingering effects may last longer.

What are the different types of Kratom?

There are several different ways Kratom can be sold: leaves, powder and extract. Dried
leaves are the most common form of Kratom. The quality of the leaves is the most important
factor in the strength of Kratom. ¡°Super¡± or ¡°premium¡± leaves have green petiole and
generally come from central and southern regions of Thailand, which are full of rich and
fertile soil. ¡°Commercial leaves¡± are a blend of leaves of different color, i.e. leaves
with green/white and red petioles. These leaves can come from various parts of South-East Asia,
as well as from cloned and grown Kratom from around the world. Purple Sticky¢â Kratom Leaf is
primarily of the green/white-veined kind, which is superior in quality and is harvested
throughout a year in Indonesia. Powder consists of concentrated powdered leaves and generally
is stronger than leaves themselves. Extract is the strongest form of Kratom. Generally,
extract is prepared by lengthy boiling and numerous straining of the leaves, which produces
a sticky substance, also known as resin. This resin is poured off and evaporated to an extract.

How to use Kratom?

Historically in Thailand, Kratom leaves were usually chewed because fresh leaves were readily
available. Nowadays, where dried leaves are the norm, Kratom leaves can be used to prepare a tea
or powdered and stirred in a fruit juice. To prepare Kratom tea, put 5 to 25 grams of crushed
leaves in hot water and let it infuse for a while. Add tea and sugar or honey, if you wish. The
experience should last for 4 to 8 hours. In low servings (up to 5 grams) Kratom tea has been known
to induce mild euphoria and to reduce fatigue, giving the drinker higher energy and the ability to
concentrate better. At strong servings 5 to 25 grams the experience becomes very euphoric and immensely
pleasurable. When using Kratom extract, take half of the amounts of the leaves. Generally, the amount
of Kratom you need depends very much on the strength of the Kratom used. Moreover, more experienced
users will feel the need to increase the servings after a while.

Is Kratom dangerous or addictive?

Kratom has being sensibly used for hundreds of year as a recreational substance. Woman who are pregnant,
or who intend to become pregnant and breast-feeding mothers should not use Kratom. Acute side effects
include dry mouth, loss of appetite and constipation. Do not drive a vehicle, use power tools or climb
ladders while under the influence of Kratom. Do not use in combination with MAO inhibitor drugs.

Is Kratom legal?

Kratom is legal in Europe and in the USA (except state of Louisiana).
Only a small number of countries have prohibited kratom:
Australia, Thailand, Cambodia, Burma, Malaysia and Vietnam.
